Johannes Nicolaus Brønsted (February 22, 1879-December 17, 1947) was a Danish physical chemist.

He received the degree within chemical engineering in 1899 and his Ph. D. around 1908 from the University of Copenhagen. He was immediately appointed prof of inorganic and physical chemistry at Copenhagen.

Inside 1906 he published his first of several papers in affinity. Within 1923 he introduced the protonic theory of acid-base reactions, simultaneously using a English chemist Thomas Martin Lowry. A equivalent month, a electronic theory was proposed by Gilbert N. Lewis, but both theories are commonly used.

He became called an authority in catalysis by acids and bases. He has a Brønsted catalysis equation named after him.

Around World War II he opposed the Nazis, and inside symptom he was elected to the Danish parliament in 1947, but may not require his seat because of unwellness. He died shortly fallowing election.
